In October, 1998, Pfizer, Inc., Healthcare Technology
Systems, Inc., Massachusetts General Hospital and the Institute
of Psychiatry of London concluded a multi-site, randomized, controlled
trial to examine the benefits of a computer-assisted behavioral
treatment program (BT STEPS™), clinician-administered behavior therapy
and systematic relaxation for the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder (OCD). The study included nearly 200 patients at 8 sites.
Patients were randomized into one of three treatment arms. Treatment
lasted 12 weeks. Results have been published and both computer and
clinician-administered therapies were significantly more helpful
than relaxation.
BT STEPS™ publications
BT STEPS assists patients in the assessment of
their OCD and then helps them design and implement their own treatment
program. Support and monitoring is provided through a series
of phone calls using Interactive Voice Response (IVR) technology.
BT STEPS includes a Workbook to guide the treatment process. The
program is available 24 hours a day by Touch-Tone phone. (No personal
computer is needed.)
BT STEPS is not currently available to the public.
Healthcare organizations and pharmaceutical companies interested
in being added to the list of parties to be notified when BT STEPS
is available should call (800) 316-2414 ext. 2478 (toll free)
