Federal grants from the National Institute on Aging have supported several studies using interactive voice response (IVR) programs to provide toll-free public assess to information about dementia, screening, and referral to local and regional resources. Initial pilot results were published in Alzheimer Disease and Associated Disorders, 2001;15:26-30. Results from an expanded program delivered for over a year were published in Alzheimer Disease and Associated Disorders, 2005;19:143-147.

A study of IVR programs to identify impaired cognitive functioning among callers was successfully completed in 2000 and published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, 2001;161:2481-2487. Based on these results, a battery of tasks known as Telephonic Remote Evaluation of Neuropsychological Deficits (TREND) was developed to evaluate longitudinal changes in cognitive functioning over time. In collaboration with the Stanford University/VA Alzheimer’s Disease Center, a three-year study of TREND was completed in 2005 and will be published after data analyses are complete.
